What is new in vSphere Replication 5.5

VMware released VMware vSphere Replication 5.5 at VMworld 2013.

vSphere Replication provides asynchronous replication for VMware virtual machines from one vSphere host to another using the power of the hosts involved independent of any storage system. It is replication configured on a per-VM basis that is simple to install, configure and operate.

New in vSphere Replication 5.5 is

  • Multiple Points in Time.
    Choose to revert to a previous ‘known good point’ after failover. It allows administrators to recover to a previous snapshot thus providing protection from logical corruptions in the application that may have been replicated.
  • Preserves a subset of historical replicas. It is possilbe to have a maximum of 24 point in time instances. So like a backup you can go back in time. This is set per 4. It can be configured to keep a numbe of instance per day for a certain amount of days. So for  example : keep 4 instances per day for the last 5 days.these replicas are kept as snapshots in the recovery site. Snapshot manager can be used to recover a state of a VM. This is a Multiple Point inTime recovery (MPIT)
  •  Multiple vSphere Replication Appliances per vCenter. Replicated between sites with or without a vCenter Server present, e.g. Remote offices. Up to 10 targets per vCenter
  • Support for Storage vMotion

When VMs are moved to another datastore by Storage vMotion (manualy or by SDRS) the VM virtual disk files remain protected by  by vSphere replication

  •  New User Interface Location

Easier management and recovery with replicated VMS.

VR is now a property of any vCenter that is using replication.

  • Support for vSAN and other Storage Service Classes

Replicate to or from the VMware Virtual SAN

User selects target storage Service Class when configuring replication

  • Dramatic Speed Improvement

New optimizations gain up to 5x speed improvement in replication

  • Storage DRS Interoperability – allows for replicated VMs to be storage vMotioned across datastores with no interruption to ongoing replication
  • Simplified Management – Deeper integration into the vSphere Web Client to configure and monitor replication within the VM and vCenter management panes simplifies the management experience for replication

There is a supported limit of 1000 VM’s. More VM’s can be protected using vSphere Replication only this is not supported by

VMware
