An introduction of VMware Go
August 31, 2012 Leave a comment
VMware Go is a cloud based solution which helps small companies with limited or no IT-knowledge to virtualize and manage their IT-infrastructure.Target audience are users of the free vSphere Hypervisor or Essentials and Essentials Plus editions.
VMware Go is available in two editions: the free Go and the subscription based Go Pro which has more features.
The start of the road to virtualization and the management of it is done using a webbased interface accessing an application in the cloud (SaaS) which assists in installing the ESXi hypervisor on a server, convert physical servers to virtuals and monitor the virtual machines. The software is able to run healthchecks and advises on updates. It is also possible to update and patch operating systems and many applications. Backups can easily be made using Mozy.
VMware Go Pro is included with the VMware vSphere 5.1 Essentials and Essentials Plus packages for use on up to 30 endpoints, as long as your Service and Support subscription is current.
VMware Go Pro will shorten your learning curve for coming up to speed with virtualization but you do not need to use it indefinitely to manage your virtualization infrastructure. As the number of your vSphere Hypervisor hosts and VMs grow, you may wish to consider upgrading to more advanced editions of VMware vSphere and managing your vSphere hosts with VMware vCenter Server.
On the VMware Communties a blog has more details on the next release. The title is Upcoming VMware Go September Release
For those of you who went to the VMworld show this week and caught the amazing new features of vSphere 5.1 and VMware Go this may be old news, but for those of you who have not heard we have a feature release coming out in September. VMware Go has a number of new features coming to extend the already amazing functionality in vSphere 5.1. VMware Go’s Virtual features focused on the free ESXi Hypervisor and onboarding first time VMware ESXi Hypervisor users. With this next release we are helping users take the next step to the Essentials and Essentials Plus kits. VMware Go will be able to deploy the v5.1 vCenter Server Virtual Appliance and designate which ESXi Hypervisors to manage all in a very simple workflow, add alarms to vCenter that will notify you via email when different errors or failures occur, view and acknowledge alarms in the vCenter Servers you have managed, and more. Below you will find a brief summary of the new features coming. Watch for these new features on September 10th!
