Recording of VMworld 2011 USA sessions available and how to save for offline viewing

Recordings of all breakout sessions of VMworld 2011 USA are now available for viewing. Viewing is restricted to anyone attending VMworld or having paid for recorded sessions only.

View the sessions here: http://www.vmworld.com/community/sessions/

When you want to save the recordings for offline viewing there are several ways to do this. The most simple way is for Firefox. Download DownloadHelper. Start the recording of the session, press Extra in the Firefox menu-> Downloadhelper ->media and select the FLV file.

For Internet Explorer we need to find out the URL of the actual .FLV file (the video streaming file). I downloaded HttpWatch which has a free Edition http://www.httpwatch.com/
HttpWatch will show the URL’s of sessions which are opened by your browser. Installing HttpWatch is easy. After installing, enable it. For Internet Explorer, select Tools and enable HttpWatch by clicking on it. You will see a Httpwatch pane open in the lower part of Internet Explorer.

Then go to http://www.vmworld.com/community/sessions/ and sign in using your account and password used to register for VMworld access.  Select the VMworld edition (201o most likely ) you are interested in. Click on the Record button displayed in the HttpWatch pane.

Then select the breakout session you like to watch and click on the view button. You will then notice activity in HttpWatch. Watch for a http stream which file name looks similar to AB1234.flv. This the the flash video of the actual presentation.

Select this stream in Httpwatch, right click and select Copy http://sessions.vmworld.com/lcms etc

Open another Internet Explorer window, place the mouse in the URL field and Paste. Then you are able to download the .FLV file and watch it offline
